  • The Raw Food Diet in a Nutshell

Posted in Women's Nutrition on January 20th, 2010 by Marci Lall | View Comments

The aim of the Raw Food Diet is to provide your body with nutritious raw foods instead of cooked and heavily processed foods most people are used to. In the best-case scenario, you’ll eat healthy raw organic food in place of your current food choices. The idea is that the raw food diet provides your body, a living thing, with living food. When you cook your food, the enzymes in whatever you’re cooking are destroyed.

Foods Involved in the Raw Food Diet

    • Legumes
    Nuts
    • Fresh fruit
    • Vegetables
    • Fresh fruit juice

    Safety Concerns

When you start the raw food diet there will be a period of detoxification that takes place. As your body rids itself of the toxic build up you may experience some unpleasant side effects. Headaches, nausea and mild depression are common in the first few days.

You want to be sure you’re washing all fruits and vegetables very carefully, especially if you are having a hard time finding organic supplies. Since nothing is cooked, beyond using a dehydrator, pesticides and other toxins are a major concern. It’s also important to note that this diet is not advised for all people.

If you’re pregnant, anemic, a young child or at risk for osteoporosis this diet is NOT recommended for you. That being said several pregnant women have reported that they did fine on the raw food diet throughout their pregnancy.

    Conclusion

After researching this diet the raw food diet is for anyone who wants to lose weight, detoxify their system and find a healthy eating alternative. As with anything new, you should consult a physician before starting this diet, if you’re on medications or have health concerns you’ll want your physician to monitor you while undergoing this diet if you choose to. People are seeing significant weight loss, higher energy and glowing skin after using this eating strategy (because its very nutrient dense!).

In my personal opinion if you’re having trouble eating fresh or raw foods this might be a good way to help you focus on making sure you eat your fruits, veggies and other healthful foods that will give you a super-charged nutritional boost.
