  • The New Super-Fruit List For Women

Posted in Women's Nutrition on October 28th, 2008 by Marci Lall | Comments

You’ve heard many times that there are benefits of adding fruits and veggies to your eating plan. As scientific research investigates further which ones are most beneficial, we are finding that some foods are more beneficial than others for a variety of reasons, and they have been nicknamed “super-foods”.  Fruits are a definite benefit to your health, and knowing which super- fruits you need to eat will help you stay healthy, keep beautiful skin and hair, and fight infections.  We’ll go through a list of the six top super-fruits so you can go armed with knowledge on your next grocery trip.

    Tart Cherries

Often sold as dried or frozen, you can also get tart cherries in juice form.  These cherries are believed to reduce the pain associated with gout and arthritis (no other fruit has been found to do this).  There is a whopping 17 compounds in cherries that may fight cancer and heart disease.  Make sure to try this for the anti-inflammatory properties.

    Fresh Figs

We all know what fig newtons are, but fresh figs?  Try these to lower blood pressure: six fresh figs contain about double the potassium in one large banana (which prevents leg cramps when you are pregnant) and are an excellent source of calcium, and fiber.  Fresh figs have a luscious sweet texture, chewy flesh, smooth skin, and crunchy seeds.  Figs should be readily available from June through September.

    Lychee

Overlooked in countries where it is not abundant, Lychees are a fruit that may help fight cancer, including breast cancer.  It also has benefits for gastrointestinal problems.  These fruits are grown mostly in China and Vietnam, as well as Northern India.  It’s about 2 inches, with a heart shape.  You eat the fruit inside, which is sweet.  The seed is not edible.

    Asian Pears

Why an Asian pear?  Asian pears provide almost 10 grams of fiber and help maintain healthy body weight.  These pears do not soften, but are a hard fruit.  They store well… up to three months in the refrigerator.   They are also very versatile for eating: use them in salads, soups and sandwiches, and in fruit desserts.

    Guava

Get this fruit for your skin.  It is also extremely high in Vitamin C (which produces collagen), one cup of guava fruit contains nearly five times the amount as one orange. It’s also believed to protect against bacteria that is food borne, and is packed with antioxidants, much like broccoli and blueberries.

    Papaya

This fruit is produced all year round, although it peaks in summer and the fall.  Known as the fruit of angels, this has a sweet butter like consistency and musky undertones.  Truly a tropical delight, this readily available fruit is also believed to protect against cancers, including lung, stomach, endometrial and prostrate cancers, and can aid in digestion and healing.  It also has anti-inflammatory effects.

Add these fruits to your diet and begin to experience the wonders of super-foods.   Thanks to our easy trading, most of these foods are accessible to everyone, although you may have to check some alternative stores, such as a health food store or a grocery with a line of healthier foods.  With the rising popularity of these foods, though, it is possible to obtain foods that will let you eat your way to better health.
