  • I Don’t Seem To Metabolize Carbs :(

Posted in Women's Nutrition on September 10th, 2008 by Marci Lall | View Comments

Here’s an interesting question I got from one of my good friends and past client.

Mary-Ann emailed me the other day with an interesting dilemma.

“Question for you… I don’t seem to metabolize carbs. Very well. Is there a reason for this as I know I have lots of muscle”

Well, Mary-Ann, from the start you have to understand that it’s pretty common for women to think they’re not metabolizing carbs properly..don’t worry your metabolizing carbs just fine.

Here area couple situations that might uncover why your metabolism is slowing down.

When you decrease your carbohydrate intake, say by going on a diet for example.  Because your eliminating carbs from foods you have no source of glucose for your boy to get any energy from and so Your body goes into a state of “ketosis” which is where your body uses fat to get some energy.   Unfortunately your metabolism will decrease and slow down.

Another reason why your metabolism might not be breaking down carbs as effectively is because of yo-yo dieting.   Losing weight and then gaining it back restarts your metabolism every time.  So it’s kinda like starting from scratch every time you want to lose the weight again.  Unfortunately your metabolism will decrease and slow down.

Notice how with both of these situations I ended it with “Unfortunately your metabolism will decrease and slow down.”?  That should stick in your head because these are actions you DO NOT want to take.  If you find yourself in these situations you better change your lifestyle and thinking right then and there!

Don’t look down on carbohydrates, because they provide your body with a multitude of benefits that you just cant live without.

Continue to eat your foods in moderation (including carbs), and continue to push yourself with your workouts.  Remember if you don’t continue to be consistent with your eating and exercise you wont get too far.  What’s the old saying?

“If you don’t use it…You lose it”

Hope that helps and if anyone has any questions or comments be sure to drop a line in the box below.
