For many years everyone knew that smoking killed millions of people and was the biggest health risk in North America, but according to a study conducted by the City College of New York and Columbia University, the biggest health threat is now obesity.

While smoking remains a serious risk to your health, obesity seems to be overtaking more and more of the population and has far more health consequences than smoking. While smoking can lead to cancer and disease, obesity carries those same risks plus causes heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, extreme fatigue, and can even lead to stroke.

While smokers can often carry on with their bad habit and lead a fairly normal life until disease strikes, obesity lowers your quality of life immediately. Most obese people get sick more often and in general have less ability to move around comfortably.

Fortunately, you can eat healthier and become more active to overcome obesity and often some of the internal damage can be corrected as excess fat leaves the body.

This study followed over three million people from the U.S. and Canada and determined that while less people are smoking, obesity has grown by more than 80%. This means it has definitely taken the prize as the biggest health threat in North America.
