  • How To Have Proper Gym Etiquette

Posted in Women's Fitness on September 18th, 2009 by Marci Lall | View Comments

With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, you’re probably starting to go to the gym more frequently. This of course is so that you can try to get in shape and look your very best for all of the upcoming holiday celebrations! I think we would all like to “wow” our friends and family members with how fantastic we look, especially the ones we haven’t seen in awhile!

    etiquette

If you’re fairly new to working out at the gym, there is something that you need to know. Maybe you’re not aware of this, but there is actually proper gym etiquette that should be followed in order to stay on great terms with your fellow gym members.

For starters, you’ll want to be sure to NOT stay on any one machine for an excessive length of time. This is because “hogging” machines at the gym is definitely frowned upon, since people that do that are being inconsiderate towards the other gym members.

Also, if you notice that you have sweat a lot after using a particular machine, be sure to wipe up the sweat and then spray the machine thoroughly with disinfectant spray. You’ll want to be sure to do this as there’s nothing worse than going to use a machine and finding a big, nasty puddle of sweat all over it – Disgusting!

One thing that you should never do is strike up a conversation with people at the gym while they are wearing headphones. The reason for this is that when someone is wearing headphones at the gym, they often do it partially as a way to non-verbally communicate to other gym members that they want to be left alone so that they can focus on their workout.

So those are some quick tips to help you NOT be one of those “people” that gym members despise and talk about in the change rooms.  Just remember to always practice proper gym etiquette and you’ll be AOK.

Great post Marci. This is kind of one of the biggest reasons why I don't like to go to the bigger gyms. People just don't know how to clean up after themselves it's so gross and personally I find it disrespectful.
