  • Olympic Strategy # 1

Posted in Lifestyle, Self Improvement, Women's Fitness on August 12th, 2008 by Marci Lall | View Comments

Okay, I gotta tell you, I’m really enjoying the first couple days of the Olympics.

I’ve had the chance to actually hear some of the interviews done with some of the medal winners and one thing that they all had in common was the big “G” word.

    G O A L S

These athletes commit their goals to paper and even have it at their nightstand so they see it each and everyday.  They adjust their goals when necessary and plan out how they are going to achieve these goals.

And…well we get to see the outcome of countless hours of training and people achieving their goals, which is pretty inspiring.

As you try to enhance your life by either losing weight or becoming fit, there’s definitely some things you can learn from the athletes which you can implement into your own training and goal setting should be one of them.

To be able to set or write a proper goal there are some elements that you must consider.

Using the SMART acronym is a surefire way to make sure you cover all the aspects of setting a goal.

    S- Specific

    M- Measurable

    A- Action oriented

    R- Realistic

    T- Timed

Specific:  First and foremost you want to make your goal is specific as possible.  This means digging deep and squeezing out every last detail about your goal.

Measurable:  Having a way to measure your success is quite important since you want to know if what you’re doing is producing results.

Action Oriented:  You can write a goal down and stare at it all you want, but if you don’t take any action, there really is no point.  Taking action and actually physically doing something to get you closer to your goal is what you need to do.

Realistic:  If your goal is not realistic you might let yourself down and do more harm to your self esteem.  Be honest with yourself and set your goals realistically.

Timed:  When will you achieve your goal? This date is very important.  Placing a deadline on a goal gives it a sense of urgency and importance.  It helps your mind determine a timeframe for you to accomplish your goal.

Practice your writing goals with this system, and in a couple weeks you’ll be able to crank out a few goals on a piece of paper easily, and ultimately start adding some meaning to our life.
